Excess Baggage: The Handbag Awards 2012

Independent Handbag Designer Awards 2012
Although it was slightly overshadowed by a plug for InStyle Magazine and Kenneth Cole “productions”, the 2012 Independent Handbag Designer Awards were held last night at the Time Life building to honor innovative staple accessories imagined by a group of small fish in a very overwhelmingly large pond.

Kenneth Cole at the Independent Handbag Designer Awards 2012

Described as the handbag fairy godmother, Emily Blumenthal organized the event which welcomed InStyle Managing Editor Ariel Foxman among other craft-friendly guests. She humbly asked the audience the rhetorical question: “Without these events how would we ever find these designers?”

Carlos Falchi Independent Handbag Designer Awards 2012

2012 Independent Handbag Designer Awards also partnered with Ebags which is now Handbags.com, which I see is an attempt to go over the heads of handbag giant Zappos.com . Hopefully they can strike a chord with the small business advocates in the audience as they will be the preferred platform to sell the emerging handbag designers’ creations.
Independent Handbag Designer Awards 2012

My personal favorite was the aqua colored Farah clutch (above) by the gorgeous Iranian-American sisters of the Ita Collection. It stole my heart–and first prize for best overall handbag.

The Cancer Community Honors Carmen Marc Valvo at 2012 Gala

When a mayor gets giddy as she’s about to introduce you to a room full of doctors and high-profile donors, its hard to ignore the influence you’ve created.

Carmen Marc Valvo at the Cancer Support Community Gala 2012

Mayor of Westlake in Texas, Laura Wheat presented an award to Carmen Marc Valvo at this years Cancer Support Community Gala held at Pier 61 of Chelsea Piers. He looked dapper in a slim lapel suit and crisp white shirt embellished with fanciful ruffle running down one side. Men know Carmen Marc Valvo for the glamorous occasion dresses their wives or girlfriends buy at Saks, Bergdorfs, and Neimans. But last nights event highlighted his health history, or as he humorously put it, “coming out if the cancer closet.”

Carmen Marc Valvo and Brian D'Arcy James at the Cancer Support Community Gala 2012

The Italian-Hispanic fashion designer suffered from colon cancer, but kept it a dire secret. To avoid prying eyes, he scheduled doctor appointments in the early morning, and didn’t mention it to friends or family.

Cancer Support Community Gala 2012

As part of the roller coaster ride cancer put him through, Carmen Marc Valvo used his career as a fashion designer as a platform to share his story. He contacted Vogue Editor-In-Chief Anna Wintour as well as New York Fashion Week creator Fern Mallis to “come out” and offer support.

Jewelry for Sale at the Cancer Support Community Gala 2012

Ever since, the designer has been involved with many a charity. What struck the Cancer Support Community about Carmen Marc Valvo’s story is how, without any affiliation to the medical community, he reached out and raised awareness within his world of fashion. As he himself confesses, “I don’t watch the news, I don’t do reality TV or anything like that. My world is fashion because it consumes me.”

Carmen Marc Valvo proves the Cancer Support Community’s theme for the night: Do the best you can do with what you have–your own story.

Do Americans Culturally Benefit From Fashion?

Read (strange concept, right?) through any fashion magazine, and you’re likely to stumble upon more than a couple of foreign names in between the lines. Us Americans have already fit some of them into our brand vocabulary–namely Louis Vuitton or Chanel. But those in the business of fashion, or who vigorously keep up with it are, I think, at a cultural advantage.

Alber Elbaz of Lanvin

Frida Giannini of GucciAnn Demeulemeester

There’s Alber Elbaz from Morocco/Israel, Frida Giannini of Italy, and Ann Demeulemeester from Belgium. These are just some of the international names on the roster of increasingly popular fashion houses. A couple other notables are Brits Mary Katrantzou from Greece and Erdem Moralioglu who is of Turkish descent.

But what’s in a name? Plenty! Every name evokes a sense of history and geography: A subject that Americans have a sub-par knowledge of. The last name only gives us a hint to the paternal heritage, while a facial feature such as the eyes or a nose can uncover the mysteries that lie behind mother’s origins. These backgrounds hold captivating stories, that not only enrich our lives, but enable us to foresee the future. Remember the adage “history repeats itself?”
And the language is another thing altogether. Although the French aren’t renowned for their bravery during combat, they’ve certainly infiltrated the fashion vocabulary. Try opening an issue of Vogue magazine without encountering the words de rigueur, passé, and chic. These are all common terms a regular joe schmo most likely has encountered in everyday life.

All this talk may make us more worldly, but let’s try to use it to avoid another attempt at chasing the elusive ideal of the enviable European woman. Us Americans ain’t so bad!

Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer Review

Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer Review

Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer Review

Despite the infomercials clouding halftime between Jersey Shore and Teen Mom (where else would I see Proactiv commercials?), I gave their green tea moisturizer a try. It turns out I fell in love with it faster than tween American girls falling in love with….you know…

Proactiv Moisturizer Formula Review:
Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer Formula Review

Lightweight with a sorbet or gel-like consistency, the green tea moisturizer spreads on like a hydrating mask and absorbs quickly. I felt no sticky residue after it absorbs. Keep in mind to use a dime-sized amount to avoid “over-hydration,” although, I don’t think that’s possible with this holy grail of a product!

Proactiv Moisturizer Packaging Review:

Proactiv Green Tea Moisturizer Packaging Review

Proactiv’s Green Tea Moisturizer comes in squeeze-tube has twist-off closure. This is actually not the most sanitary, especially if your face is littered with pimples. To avoid spreading germs, try transferring it into a pump–it makes for easier and faster “distribution”. Also thins the formula out if you have extra oily skin.

The Beauty Bitch’s Advice

The only think negative about Proactiv’s green tea moisturizer is the packaging, but how much does that really matter when your face is going to feel this good? It’s a truly refreshing formula that hydrates and refreshes, QUICKLY. And that’s what an on-the-go mom, teen, or anyone else, really needs in a moisturizer.

2012 Martha Graham Dance Company Gala at The Russian Tea Room

Legendary Dancer Martha Graham

Martha Graham may have painted the image of a brooding dancer, but she may be the only professional dance of this decade to make a substantial mark on the art form. Her methods have transcended her life on Earth and continues to impress international audiences.

The dance company she founded in 1926 has passed her signature methods to a new generation that celebrated her legacy at The Martha Graham Dance Company’s 2012 Gala.

What Ever Happened to Hard Candy Cosmetics?

When I was a little girl, struggling with my identity, I read about two sisters of Persian descent, like myself, who one day experimented with nail polish colors from the drug store. I imagined them spilling quarters of liquid onto paper and into empty bottles, mixing them like traditional artists creating one-of-a-kind paintings.

Then in college, I watched Ellen Page mentally fuck Patrick Wilson, a supposed child molester in a movie of the same name. To push the word association even further, Madonna’s much-anticipated album Hard Candy was released with Pharrell Williams collaborations at every track. It goes without saying that Hard Candy has gone through some really messed up metamorphosis in my brain. So imagine my reaction when I saw this display at Walmart!

Hard Candy Cosmetics

Yes I was in Walmart wandering the beauty isle, because not all of their products support crude capitalism…but that’s material for another blog post. In any case, the new Hard Candy display offers that famous sky-blue color that made Hard Candy a Sephora household name for $5 instead of $10. And not to mention another 260 other products ranging from foundation to eyeshadow. I think this transition is quite positive as the line remained cruelty-free a.k.a. they don’t test on animals. And since Hard Candy is now available on a Walmart scale, it’s more accessible for that many more people.

The ultimate test, however, is to see how the new line measures up to the old.

How curious are you to try the new Hard Candy line?

You Can Buy Hard Candy Cosmetics at Walmart or Walmart.com .

NYX Mascara Review – Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara

NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara Review

NYX Mascara Review - Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara

My Lash Type:

Long, on the thinner side, with a slight downward curve.

NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara Wand

NYX Mascara Wand Review:

The NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir mascara wand is actually pretty substantial, as the length spans my whole almond-shaped eye. While that’s a plus for us doe-eyed girls, the short bristles are tightly packed together, and thus, tend to gather bunches of lashes together for a weird mono-lash effect.

NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara

NYX Mascara Formula/Consistency Review:

This ain’t no schmere-and-run mascara. NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir’s mascara formula is quite thin and liquidy, so the short and tight wand tends to carry a lot of product. After experimenting, I’ve learned that if you wiggle the wand towards the opening, it leaves a “normal” amount behind.

The Beauty Bitch’s Advice

If you want longer lashes, NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara may help in that endeavor, but be prepared to sacrifice volume and sparse-looking lashes. I, however, have to pass on this mascara.

If you wish, you can buy NYX Faux Lashes Boudoir Mascara online at Ulta.com

Stuart Weitzman’s Revamp for Spring 2012

Flipping through the indulgent new Harper’s BAZAAR September issue, I noticed the wider engaging pages, the tactile paper made thicker, and another revamp that stroke me enough to make me pick up the laptop and write a post about it!

Mission accomplished Stuart Weitzman!

You’d never guess, but the shoe designer’s new approach to ad campaigns for Spring 2012 is something to write home about.

BEFORE

AFTER

Stuart Weitzman Spring 2012 Featuring Natalia Vodianova

Using that Wharton School of Business degree he got from UPenn, Stuart Weitzman made several strategic changes.

Personally, what first caught my attention was that sexy new logo! So I picked typographical changes over preferences in chicks — shoot me. But that spikier font in jet black superimposed onto an almost glowing white background — it’s ethereal and so much sexier than the obvious, sometime cliche, full-on spotlight of the first.

The designer shoe line who manufactures designs that fit all sorts of specialty sizes also enlisted one of the most recognizable faces in fashion — Natalia Vodianova. The former spotlighted Solange Wilvert is also a model (obvi) but not nearly as famous or experienced. Like Christian Siriano’s new approach to marketing and designing, maybe he’s looking to attract a new audience, himself!

For BAZAAR & Stuart Weitzman, the Spring 2012 theme is clean.

Amore Pacific Time Response Review

If you’ve checked out the Sulwhasoo Review and wanted to try out it’s parent line, Amore Pacific, here’s your chance!

This Amore Pacific review will first focus on the individual products and then as a whole.

Amore Pacific Time Response Hand Cream

Amore Pacific Time Response Renewal Serum

Amore Pacific Time Response Eye Renewal

Amore Pacific Time Response Renewal Creme

Amore Pacific Time Response Hand Cream Review

Amore Pacific Time Response Hand Renewal Creme

Amore Pacific Time Response Hand Cream is by far my favorite of the Time Response products. Not only does it smell nice, but leaves skin very smooth. This is where the rich consistency and oil-rich moisture of Amore Pacific’s Time Renewal line is suitable for any skin type. As for whether or not it diminishes dark spots and other hand imperfections, I couldn’t tell you because, well, I’m only 24 years old. Sorry!

Amore Pacific Time Response Renewal Serum Review

Amore Pacific Time Response Skin Renewal Serum

According to MySkin.com, “A skin serum is that one beauty product that has the ability to penetrate deep within the layers of the skin and get completely absorbed to give phenomenal results.” The Amore Pacific Time Response Renewal Serum alone was just the right of moisture and almost felt like a skin-hydrating sorbet than a serum. As for the effects, I did not notice a significant difference.

Amore Pacific Time Response Eye Renewal Review

Amore Pacific Time Response Eye Renewal CremeAmore Pacific Time Response Eye Renewal Cream

When applying Amore Pacific Time Response Eye Renewal Creme, the sheen is a bit intense which shows signs of a high protein/fat content. The extreme moisture makes the eye area supple so if you have dry eyes, this is a great eye renewal cream. While the cream did little to remedy my dark under-eye circles, I did notice a small reduction in the appearance of fine lines around my eyes.

Amore Pacific Time Response Renewal Creme Review

Amore Pacific Time Response Skin Renewal CremeAmore Pacific Time Response Skin Renewal Cream

This Amore Pacific Eye Renewal Cream has a pink-ish tone I find present in most creams from Asian skincare lines and a heavy fragrance to match. While I quite enjoy the deep moisturizing effect, this time response product may be on the heavy side — which can be good or bad depending on your skin type. Since it’s the winter the moisture was welcome and restored elasticity. However, I’d store it for the Summer.

When Used Together…

Heavily scented and thick, using all the Time Response products actually broke me out and I am NOT sensitive to most skin care products. When I used the eye renewal creme in conjunction with the serum OR the creme, my skin was more even and moisturized. Be smart and go lighter rather than heavier — try the eye cream paired with either the serum OR the renewal creme depending on the season and your skin type.

The Beauty Bitch’s Advice

These Amore Pacific Time Response products are all on the heavy side because they are packed with essential oils and also heavily scented, which have been useful and helful for winter. I 100% recommend the Time Response Hand Creme for anytime, especially if you have excessive dry skin problems or just dry hands during the winter. You can use the Time Renewal serum as a light moisturizer, but I would opt for the Time Renewal Creme during winter months. In summation, the entire Amore Pacific Time Renewal Line should be for those with dry to VERY dry skin.

Amore Pacific Time Renewal line is available at Bergdorf Goodman.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Commercial 2012

Maybelline Color Tattoo Commercial

WOAH, WOAH, WOAH! Did I just hear Insomnia by Faithless play on TV, and it’s 15 years after 1995?! The energizing song just played in Maybelline’s color tattoo commercial on E!, and during Keeping up with the Kardashians no less–how much more mainstream could you get? Splashes of wild colors were thrown all over, illuminated as if black lights hovered over Avalon’s dilapidated dance floor. Maybelline’s tattoo gimmick even reminds me of those stick-ons we used to trade in grade school. Guess they marketed correctly. The Maybelline color tattoo commercial also utilizes the trend below.

Neon Colors

Neon

Ever since scoring my Rebecca Minkoff Black Cat MAB, I’ve been on a neon pink binge. Combining it with black is the safest bet–from workout clothes to sneakers that showcase the hues. A trip to Electric Zoo (the incredible Electronic Music Festival on Randall’s Island) or any event thumping the signature “unts, unts, unts” in the background will tell you that neon is alive and well. Find it at your local strip club supply store in such fashion essentials such as hooker fishnet stockings and tube tops-so in.

Madonna – MDNA

The queen of regurgitated 80′s culture, 8-bit graphic outfits, and music vids bonds with the queen of, well, 80′s pop. The name MDNA is a spin off the ever-present club drug MDMA — a pure form of ecstasy. Funny how Madonna (aka MDNA) chose M.I.A. over Lady Gaga. It must be all that blonde ambition getting in the way! The first single Gimme All your Luvin’ has the cheerleader anthem akin to Avril Lavigne’s “Girflfriend”.  But unlike the drug, I predict it will be blasting at neither superclubs nor underground Brooklyn warehouses.

Girls That Look Like Skrillex

A Girl That Looks Like Skrillex!

Girls Who Look Like Skrillex

Pioneering a mainstream form of Dubstep, Skrillex’ mohawk Sinead O’Connor mashup has inspired a hilarious blog. Whether intentional or not, the scensters do a good job of emulating Skrillex and his philosophy of nerd meets indie electro snob.

Tiesto Twitter HP

Tiesto Streams Live (and free)

Assuming a guy who makes a $20,000-$30,000 a gig doesn’t need the money is an understatement. Earlier this month DJ Tiesto generously performed live for free via Twitter. I didn’t stay up to watch him perform (who goes by Pacific Time these days, anyway? Pshh), but this gave newcomers the opportunity to bask in his “pushes button, points at crowd” routine. The only bone I have with world’s most famous DJ is that he hasn’t come out with a “new album” in a couple of years. And Kaleidoscope hardly counted as it was packed with collaborations including Calvin Harris, Tegan & Sara, and Nelly Furtado. Tiesto was always in the mainstream and this just proves he’ll be up and running as long as he can keep pushing and pointing.

Trump Responsible for Lady Gaga’s Success!

Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga David LaChapelle

Lady Gaga By David LaChapelle

No, this is not an article from The Onion, but it is most likely a way to draw attention to the new season of Celebrity Apprentice.

In any case, no other than Donald Trump recently revealed the sole reason for Lady Gaga’s paramount success! We can all now rest assured that because Donald Trump “allowed” her to perform for the “Miss Universe Pageant,” the pariah is now able to preach her gospel of self-love, empower the LGBT community and further anti-bullying campaigns across the world. All extremely similar causes that come to mind when you think Donald Trump, right?

Perhaps Trump is unaware that the most active audience that Miss Universe engages include the vicarious moms, subjected daughters, and fans of “Toddlers and Tiaras”. But Gaga’s worldwide success has consistently been undermined – in the past by her former songwriter-partner-boyfriend, and now by Narcissus Trump. Riding off someone else’s fame is not a new concept, but it does allude to the “theory” of the male threatened by a woman’s success.

Thomas Jane, Thomas Jane Hung

Um...more please?

Another “not new” example of nonacceptance of women in power can be demonstrated by HBO. Recently they announced the suspension of “Hung”, and the renewal of “Enlightened”. While the first show is about women sexually asserting themselves through objectifying men, the second is focused on a self-destructive health and beauty executive. It looks like the network would rather highlight the struggles of a depressed woman than celebrate the sexual freedom of women, in addition to the sexual objectification of men. It could purely be ratings-based, though I know I would rather watch half-naked Thomas Jane than the projected emotional wreck of myself.

And perhaps there is need for a change. Fortune magazine’s article “A New Kind of Group Therapy” described new types of leaders they think will need to emerge to reorganize our broken business mentalities. Bill George says “…we must focus on EQ – emotional intelligence. EQ, unlike IQ, can be improved by working on self-control, social awareness, and relationship skills”

Hm, nurturing, team-playing, etc? Doesn’t that sound like qualities women possess?

Untapped PR Showcases The Talented Lexx Perry Jewelry

Jewelry Designer Lexx Perry & His Metal Mohawk

Jewelry Designer Lexx Perry & His Metal Mohawk

While most people might be able to tell that Lexx Perry has a larger-than-life persona by looking at his jewelry designs, I was given away by the silver and black metal spikes that were strategically and meticulously glued to his shaved head. Creating a fiercer Mohawk than any Sid Vicious wannabe could ever come up with, he was my favorite of the fashion designers showing their work at Untapped PR’s fashion show at The Grace Hotel.

Lexx Perry's Simple Message

Born in the Brooklyn, Lexx Perry uses industrial materials and plenty of chains, studs and spikes in jewelry that ranges from cuffs to necklaces and even a bondage-bikini as seen below. He even custom makes extensions for shoes as commissioned pieces.

Sulwhasoo’s Parent Company Amore Pacific Celebrates Loyal Clients

Amore Pacific

“What’s one product you recommend from Amore Pacific?” I asked the flawlessly faced woman next to me.

Raising her high cheekbones, she smiled, and without hesitation responded; “Well, from the Amore Pacific Time Response collection there’s the Eye Renewal Cream and Treatment Cleansing Foam. The Natural Protector which is a sunscreen SPF 30, and from Sulwhasoo I really love the Deep Cleansing Oil, Snowise Serum and, oh, there’s this other…”

In the midst of conversation one of the boutique workers walked up to us and greeted her with a hug and a kiss on each side. It was only shortly after that I realized that I just met one of Amore Pacific boutique’s best clients. The short and feisty salsa dancer I initially spoke with told me she even convinced her husband, in addition to her longtime college buddy, to try the Amore Pacific skincare line. Now they come into the SoHo boutique and Spa almost every week, for either a facial or to try more products. The trio is vegan and environmentally conscious, so it makes sense why they adhere to Amore Pacific like toner to epidermis.

Amore Pacific is the parent brand to Korean Skincare line Sulwhasoo, and one of the biggest cosmetics companies in Asia. I discovered Sulwhasoo at Bergdorf Goodman’s event and wrote a formal Sulwhasoo review covering a base of their products with great results.  Amore Pacific was promoting the Time Reversal line, which I will be ecstatic to try, since no one ever grows younger!

Christopher Vs. Tory Burch : A Modern Day War of the Roses?

Will Tory Burch Wage Retail Revenge on Christopher Burch & C. Wonder?

Lured in by the cheery, carefree music blasting from the high ceilings of the SoHo storefront, I walked in to what I thought was a Kate Spade store and got a visual punch in the face. Pure energy emitting from lime-green walls, magnified by bursts of shiny, yellow-gold accents. Eager and happy to serve, the store clerks showed me around when my eye caught sight of a Hermes knockoff cuff, complete with horse bit (unfortunately, it’s sold out now). Walking out excited and giddy, I remarked to myself what progress I thought Kate Spade made in updating her store. What I was shocked to discover was that the store, C. Wonder, belongs to Tory Burch’s ex-husband J. Christopher. But looking past the brand’s last name and into his actual background, I shouldn’t have been.

Christopher Vs. Tory Burch

Will C. Wonder Turn Christopher & Tory Burch into a retail version of War of the Roses?

A venture capitalist, J. Christopher Burch experienced his first fashion success with college sportswear line, Eagle’s Eye, that he sold for $60 million. Unfortunately, if you google the brand today, Ebay pops up as the sole retailer who carries their clothes. So while Christopher may have known how to start a business, his ex-wife Tory Burch, may have been the branding brains exemplified in the worldwide success of her brand.

But visiting a C. Wonder store may change your mind as to what C. Burch has up his sleeve. Here are my top picks that make the store one step ahead in terms of innovation:

C. Wonder Velvet Ballet Flats

C. Wonder Velvet Ballet Flats

C. Wonder Velvet Travel Ballet Flats $68

You’ve seen the cheap Dr. Scholls version of these – made of plastic with minuscule amounts of padding. These stylish babies that resemble Hugh Hefner’s signature loafers are made of “luxe” velvet and pack a whopping 5 inches of padding and rubber sole. With textures ranging from metallics to snakeskin, the flats even offer monogram patterns. Sure, they aren’t nightclub backup flats, but they are perfect for overnight escapades and vacays.

C. Wonder Shoes + Accessories

C. Wonder Shoes + Accessories

Suede Pump (leather upper AND lining) $98,  Clip-On Pump Accessories $28

Genius! Offered in vibrant hues, these otherwise basic suede pumps are perfect for work and transitions well into the night with a variety of sparkly metal clips. Essentially, that’s one pair of shoes for $126 and equates into $63 for work shoes and $63  for party shoes. If you get the $28 clip, it would equate to an additional $14 each pair since you can attach it to the front OR back. With holiday parties being held an hour or so after work, it’ll be a hell of a lot easier to change. Though economically sound, tread carefully, as I think the clips may leave an imprint on the suede.

Although they divorced, Christopher Burch remains co-founder of Tory Burch Inc. It will be interesting to see how his new store will affect the relationship he has with both his ex-wife and brand Tory Burch.

Some other C. Wonder noteworthys:

C. Wonder Jacket $178

C. Wonder Jacket $178

I call this one “The Justin Timberlake” on account of its resemblance with his outfit from The Social Network. Oh and maybe it makes us rethink the whole creative plagiarism thing? Zing!

C. Wonder Clutches $68

C. Wonder Clutches $68

Clutches with cool industrial closures! Lining is metallic and the price isn’t insane considering the included chain strap (not shown…what am I, your personal catalog?!?).

Elva Fields Jewelry for C. Wonder

Elva Fields Jewelry for C. Wonder (varies)

Elva Fields created a limited edition jewelry line and this one is by far the most unique. Double ended tassel necklace with rhinestones on each end — rarely do you see jewelry you can style to decorate your back, waist and neck. This one is around $98 and for the variety is so worth the price.

C. Wonder Bags

C. Wonder Bags $148

C. Wonder Rings

C. Wonder Rings All $48, Frog $58

TrustoCorp Explores “Beauty” at Opera Art Gallery

TrustoCorp Opera Soho Gallery

Walking into the TrustoCorp  art opening at Opera Gallery located in SoHo NYC, I was instantly enamored of their work. Plus, the artists’ pseudonym sounds so much like the mega-corporation “Conglomo” villainized on the 90′s Nickelodeon TV show, “Rocko’s Modern Life,” I already liked them on their name alone!

Target: Missoni

After dropping her daughter off at an Upper East Side private school, my boss’ wife rushed from her Lexington Avenue apartment to our office where the tech guy set up a laptop for her to use. Sternly focused as if she had OD’d on Adderall, she sat down and slammed the keyboard while simultaneously leaning toward the computer screen. Frantically clicking the mouse, she grabbed the telephone - paging her husband,  a man who owns a diamond import and distribution company – and hurriedly asked, “Is the site up yet?!”

Missoni For Target

Missoni For Target

Like thousands of other women (and scalpers), she was waiting for Missoni’s diffusion line to be available on Target.com . This proved to be fatal as the server crashed due to an overwhelming amount of traffic. Perhaps with diffusion lines, it’s a better idea to sell in-store exclusively, as a way to tell the consumer: “If you want it that badly, put your health at risk, not our reputability.”

The line sells such diverse products as rain boots, children’s clothing, and a bike – a product luxe fashion houses like Gucci and Chanel sell. I haven’t seen the products in person, but the whole vintage bike, chevron pattern, I think, would appeal to hipster, indie types. And of course wannabe label whores.

Target Missoni Success

Target Stock Chart After Missoni

Fortune magazine recently featured a bird’s eye view of the discount retailer’s stock chart, shedding some light on why the Target name has become iconic in itself. It showed that although the designer collaboration with Missoni boosted sales, Target’s stock price still trails behind Walmart’s by close to $2. Walmart’s prices are, in my opinion, much better.

The Missoni for Target experience taught me that, while I knew Target was the go-to for lower-income tax brackets, the “rich” are just as prone to the hype. Go figure why she didn’t just buy a real Missoni sweater.

Kardashian Kollection Takes Sears

Kardashian Kollection For Sears

Kardashian Kollection For Sears

After conquering kontemporary klothing by teaming up with BEBE, the kweens of alliteration, the Kardashians, are now making it (even more) mainstream with a “kollection” in store at Sears — a fashion forerunner, to say the least.

While Bebe’s revenue stream is relatively alive and well, Sears has been struggling for years. According to Businessweek, “in August it reported its fourth quarterly loss in five quarters.” Meanwhile, Forbes magazine makes notable mentions of their merger with Kmart in 2005, followed by another declaration of bankruptcy just one year ago in 2010.

I believe their rebuilding started with a new commercial campaign dispatching the “Sears Blue Crew” to re-market their appliances. Now, the retailer has sprinkled some water from the fountain of youth to revitalize their junior clothing targets, using such tactics that coincide with the Abercrombie & Fitch push-up bra.

How many fashionistas will step foot in a Sears to look like Kim, much less Kourtney or Khloe? You’d be as surprised as I was — just take a chance and visit — you’ll see the shelves wiped clean, random leggings hanging from corners, and you may even find a style you want to buy.

Kardashians For Bebe

Kardashians For Bebe Runway Fall 2010

Speaking of the Kardashian’s previous collaboration with BEBE, this collection is chock full of replicas reminiscent of the structured jackets and curve-hugging dresses the Kardashians usually wear. And surprise — the price isn’t far off, even with the introductory 30% off.

So why would someone buy trendy clothes endorsed by celebs like the Kardashians at Sears? Simple — Sears’ massive presence in America gives the Kardashians the chance to fill the need the average teenager has for trendy boutiques, even if they live in barren middle-of-nowhere.

The response was so positive, Businessweek even cites that Sears is looking to license the Kardashian Kollection brand, diversifying Sears’ portfolio, especially in an area where it would benefit from an update. This would also help its stock as “Sears would receive a fee for use of its name on products.”

While there is still room for failure, there will always be a red carpet rolled out for a good ol’ fashioned American comeback.

B Brian Atwood Shoe Review, Premieres at Saks

B Brian Atwood Boots

B Brian Atwood Boots

Brian Atwood‘s main shoe collection plays it safe with a trio of platform heeled pumps in different colors. B Brian Atwood, however, digs into the successful elements of other designer shoes, such as Roberto Cavalli’s animal textures and prints (as pictured above), Manolo Blahnik’s steel stiletto heels, and Gucci’s cutout bodies.

B Brian Atwood Shoe

B Brian Atwood Falcon Leather Knee-High Buckle Boots

My absolute favorite B Brian Atwood shoe is the Falcon Leather Knee-High Buckle Boot, which looks like something model Karlie Kloss wore for Dior circa the Fall 2010 ad campaign — when John Galliano still had his sanity, or at least the sense to keep his mouth shut. This goes along with the notion that all of Brian Atwood’s new shoes in the collection borrow elements from other designer brands that make their shoes such great sellers. Thus, making his new line an instant hit.

B Brian Atwood Collection at Saks

B Brian Atwood Collection at Saks

B Brian Atwood shoes range between $275 – $995, but I noticed some shoes were made in Italy or had the stamp “Vero Cuio” (“Genuine Leather”), while other boots were simply “Made in China”. I don’t agree that the prices are justified but B Brian Atwood hits the contemporary market quite nicely – older women looking for something fresher as well as scavengers looking to pick at something below $200 when they go on sale. Either way, B Brian Atwood focuses on style rather than brand.  Although Brian Atwood has struck a cord with those in-the-know, he has yet to make it mainstream as aforementioned Manolo, Cavalli, or Gucci.

Horizons: Perry Ellis Spring / Summer 2012 Review

Wisps of guitar strings filled the runway in a stark white Lincoln Center room. As the bass drum, heavy folk music suddenly boomed, so did the runway floor, and in turn, the audience.

Every other designer has at one time or another been influenced by some desert or other (the Sahara, anyone?) and Perry Ellis 2012 Spring/Summer is no exception, climbing aboard the American spirit with an ode to California desert-land with a sprinkle of prep.

Horizontal Lines at Perry Ellis Spring Summer 2012

Horizontal Lines at Perry Ellis Spring / Summer 2012

If one thing could give hint to his inspiration, it would be horizontal lines. Whether tangible on cardigans or implied in the structure of the garment, they evoke new opportunity like the gold rush in the 1920s. Bandanas were slung around models’ necks à la cowboys, as if Ellis were the king of draping alongside the royal Donna Karan.

Perry Ellis Spring Summer 2012

Perry Ellis Spring Summer 2012 Look

Patterns appeared like heat maps or the red mountains of Nevada, and the other spectacular natural geography of the West.

Bottoms were casual, capri-length, and shorts for breezy, easy living. No socks for pastel-hued shoes, though, which shows the preppy, modern twist Perry Ellis puts on Americana.

Jonathan Cheban, friend of Kim Kardashian and owner of Command PR, bobbed his head along to the beat while not far off sat True Blood hunk, Joe Manganiello, whom those on the sidelines refered to as “the hot werewolf guy.” He could have easily been a closet-case hipster with his green plaid shirt, blue-grey skinnies, and semi-clunky boots. Seated next to a cute blonde, he embodied the laid-back attitude of the Perry Ellis 2012 Spring/Summer collection.

Cocktails and Couture Beauty Recap

X-Rated Fusion Liqueur

X-Rated Fusion Liqueur Served at Cocktails & Couture

Beauty veteran and social media entrepreneur Lianne Farbes brought underground beauty brands to the light of bloggers and guests at an event called “Cocktails & Couture”. Held at Bo Concepts Studio in the middle of Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, Cocktails & Couture reminds us that clothes aren’t the only things that deserve our attention — especially with the important role nail polish plays in 2011 runway shows. Check out some of the following highlights that let nails and skin take center stage for Fall 2011 fashion.

Immunocologie

If Laura Brewster, the incredibly charismatic and helpful sales representative, didn’t catch your attention at the event, perhaps Immunocologie’s claim to shame iconic skincare brand, La Mer, will pique your interest. Laura explained, “If you look at La Mer, the second ingredient is mineral oil — that’s drugstore Aquafor, Vaseline. That’s why when you apply it, they tell you: break it up.” The textures in both creams are very similar but Immunocologie’s product has more of a sheen to it. Only time and usage will truly tell.

CND's Shellac Polish

CND + Shellac Nail Polish

Eternally searching for long-wearing nail polish, Shellac claims to last a full 14 days before another manicure is necessary. CND is the nail salon offering the manicures, and with a staff of three on board at Cocktails & Couture, the list filled up within the first hour, leaving some guests, including yours truly, sans chip-free nails.

Nontoxique

The Nontoxique Skincare Treatment Routine at Work.

Nontoxique

In addition to the Shellac manicure given out, this holistic skincare brand gave treatments using their all-natural products designed to work together to revive hands, feet and nails. After applying a foaming hand cleanser, almond butter-based herbal scrub, orange oil-infused serum, day cream and cuticle balm, my hands were soft as butter and had an elegant sheen. To get the full effect of the products, I recommend wearing some sort of glove or using the products before bed, as my first trip to the bathroom kind of soiled the experience.

FRS Healthy Energy Drink

FRS Healthy Energy Drink

FRS — Energy Drink

Since alcohol lowers your immune system, and New York Fashion Week loads you up with more champagne than Times Square on New Year’s Eve, FRS is here! Instead of chugging dehydrating coffee to rev you up for work with a hangover, try an FRS — the only healthy energy drink on the market. The only problem is that FRS, at least the Mango Orange flavor, tastes like crap. The concept sounds brilliant, but tread carefully.

Fashions Night In?

Today, international fashion runway “knockoff” retailer, Zara, will begin selling its clothes online to US customers. With free standard shipping to all 50 states, the option to pick-up ordered clothes at a nearby Zara store, as well as free exchanges and returns, Zara will push one step ahead of other budget-friendly fashion darlings like Forever 21 and H&M.

Ironically, the site launches one day before the Lollapalooza of fashion retail events across the world: Fashions Night Out.

Fashions Night Out

Fashions Night Out : "An unprecedented global initiative created in 2009...to...restore consumer confidence, boost the industry's economy, and put the fun back in shopping."

Beginning in New York City, Fashions Night Out is now an international event where stores of all price points and ambiances get the chance to incorporate selling tactics that high-end retailers most commonly utilize. Pumping attendees full of free champagne and hors d’oeuvers is the first way, while bringing brand, fashion-world or media-related celebrities into the store is another. Both are used in hopes that customers will actually purchase something — which almost never happens — and is more of a popularity contest, if anything. What’s more important than being popular in America? Nothing. (See reality show megastars Kim Kardashian, Jersey Shore, Real Housewives, etc.)

Although Fashions Night Out is a strong attempt to revive brick and mortar businesses to their glory days, I believe the effects of this event, as years go by, will lead to an eventual change of how stores function in the future.

Beautiful Competition: Sephora Slowly Takes Over

The cosmetic equivalent to Starbucks coffee shops, which pop up every half a block in New York City, Sephora has been a transforming force in the cosmetics industry. Major competitors appear to be taking steps to either strengthen their own fashion-forward presence, or just plain give in.

Most recently, I discovered The Body Shop integrating a small product line into 170 of the 230 Sephora stores. The line ranges from body butters to their signature tea tree oil acne treatment collections. Since their products use 100% recycled packaging and promote high ethical values, The Body Shop could well have found their new niche.

The Body Shop and Sephora

The Body Shop Collaborates with Sephora

Complication ensues when you think about the progression of this partnership. For example, The Body Shop is owned by L’Oreal – perhaps the largest cosmetics company with a portfolio spanning over 20 mainstream and premium beauty brands. Sephora is a French company owned by an even bigger French company specializing in luxury- LVMH.

Since L’Oreal owns more than half of all drugstore brands including skincare, hair care and cosmetics, it will be interesting to see what the empire will do. As prices in drugstores rise to almost match those at Sephora ($8 mascara vs. $15), L’Oreal may need to decide on one course of action. They can either sit pretty and collect profits from products that are created with little innovation (which will still sell tremendously), or they can build a better product to compete with Sephora.

LVMH

As Lancome and The Body Shop find their homes in Sephora stores, you can expect to see both retailers taking steps to merge and form a makeup goliath. After all, according to WWD, “Sephora has already placed reorders”.

Fashion Stress

Azzedine Alai Fall 2011

Azzedine Alai Fall 2011

Azzedine Alai casually mentioned that the pace of the fashion industry is running designers to the ground as he declined the offer from Dior to replace John Galliano. The fashion designer made most famous in the 90′s doesn’t seek to justify Galliano’s anti-semetic rant caught on tape, but the fact that Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH which owns Dior, dumped 6 new projects on the ex-head designer before Dior’s fall from grace, may have something to do with it. What one creative mind could design four collections for him, four collections for the house, four for men, and four for women, all in one year?

Stores that provide haute couture look-a-likes to the masses may be fueling this ouroboros of consumption in two senses. For one, stores like Zara take existing clothes, de-construct them and manufacture them in a way that sometimes suit the public better. With the economy as it is, even the most discerning shopper does a double take past the windows and picks a piece, for a relatively low price, that they won’t use extensively. Commitment and originality thrown out through the same storefront window.

Karl Lagerfeld for Macys 2011

Karl Lagerfeld for Macys 2011

Another fuel to the fire are discount lines. Soon, Karl Lagerfeld, hated by Azzedine Alai, will be releasing a discount line to Macy’s — the harbor of such humble lines as Rachel by Rachel Roy, and the Material Girl line from Madonna & Co. These add another expectation that may load onto the already overflowing plate of designers. Lagerfeld, who handles Chanel and Fendi, in addition to his own line and his past-time of photography, is the perfect example of the ideal multi-talent. Does his role re-establish the standards for designers: expecting them to be both artists and machines?

The opportunity to begin slowing down the industry, and salvaging the sanity of designers, has passed with the most recent recession. Not to say that it is over, but things have not been as damaging. It was the perfect time to slow down, since spending had decreased and store sales have dwindeld. It could have created a new culture. Instead,  it spawned a discount line to scrounge for pennies and drain creative juices.

And so the cogs keep turning.

The Coach Store Hosts Matchbook.com Launch

Hundreds of people flocked to the Coach store to meet Matchbook.com editors, but a patternmaker named Massimiliano stole the show, instead.

Coach Patternmakers, Massimiliano on right

Coach Patternmakers, Massimiliano on right

Laying out patterns of alligator, python, and patent leather, Massimiliano has 12 years of experience as a Coach bag maker. As we started asking questions about a Coach bag’s construction, he made it a point to note that all the material was harvested from animals that were going to be used for meat – which means they do not kill the animal solely for the leather.

To our surprise, he said that most of the alligator leather used in Coach bags come from the USA, while python leather is taken from South American countries like Chile. Coach works with alligator farmers, as well as wildlife regulators from Florida, to obtain the exotic skins.

An average, real Coach bag takes approximately two days and anywhere from 100 to 140 pieces of leather. Coach bags also utilize leather which has been tanned with vegetable oil. I’ve heard from many that this process is actually the superior method to making leather goods. Massimiliano took the various leather pieces of all shapes and sizes and showed guests how a real coach wallet was made by folding, hammering, and gluing leather pieces together. Unfortunately, he could not complete the wallet by stitching it because he required a sewing machine, and due to maximum occupancy of the coach store, it was a question of safety.

After passing around the Coach men’s wallet he made right then and there, he showed visitors a design card illustrating a never-before-made Coach bag that is part of the new Poppy collection. Massimiliano pointed to the rest of the store and exclaimed, “I probably made half of the bags in this store!”

Avocado Face Mask Recipe

This Avocado Face Mask Recipe utilizes avocados that have been considered a “super fruit” for many centuries!

Avocados contain almost twenty essential nutrients, including potassium, fiber, Vitamin E, folic acid, and B-vitamins, yielding avocado skin benefits. They also act as a vitamin booster by allowing the body to absorb fat soluble nutrients such as alpha and beta carotene and lutien. Now, these magical fruits are dreadfully feared by many because of their notoriously high fat content, but what people misunderstand is that the fat in avocados is “good’ fat which actually helps fight cholesterol. The truth of the matter is that we need fat, and it’s best to receive that 30% of daily fat intake that is part of the food pyramid from “good” fat found in avocado.

Using the natural super fruit as an Avocado Face Mask also adds moisture to your skin and hair, as well as silkiness. Harnessing these avocado skin benefits should be done no more than twice a week and for about half an hour.

AvocadoFaceMaskRecipe-Step1

Start making the avocado face mask by cutting the avocado lengthwise around the seed with a sharp knife with a blade at least 2 inches longer than the avocado.

AvocadoFaceMaskRecipe-Step2

Place the avocado in the palm of your hand and insert. Without moving the knife, roll the avocado around, slicing it from top to bottom and back to the top. A gentle twist will separate the two halves of the avocado, exposing the meat and the seed inside.

AvocadoFaceMaskRecipe-Step3

To remove the avocado seed, carefully “hit” the seed with the knife so it pierces it about 1/4 inch or so. Turn the knife with the seed and it will come loose from the inner flesh so you can easily lift it up and out of the avocado.

The Avocado face mask recipe is as follows:

1. Take an avocado, cut it in half.

2. Take one half and mash it in one bowl and the other half in another bowl. One bowl will be used for your hair and the other for your face.

3. The various vitamins in the fruit help soften skin ( especially vit E) and the oils help to moisturize and replenish skin cells. Before application hair should be dry (shampooed) and face should be washed with cleanser.

4. For a twist, you can add fresh lemos juice (about 3 teaspoons) to the mashed avocado to help exfoliate dead skin cells. Organic Cinnamon can be added to add more antioxidants and radiance to the skin.

If you are blemish prone, I suggest a little less avocado and more lemon juice! And remember, whatever is left can be eaten to give your insides a piece of that rejuvenation.

Sulwhasoo FirstCare Serum Review

Sulwhasoo FirstCare Serum

Sulwhasoo First Care Serum has the color of healthy maple syrup, and a smooth, fresh consistency. Two small pumps is enough to cover your face, yet it does not have a dramatic impact on skin. Most serums leave a sticky tight residue, but First Care Serum hardly leaves a trace. Though it feels comfortable, one wonders if it actually does anything a serum is supposed to do.

Sulwhasoo Balancing Water Review

Sulwhasoo Balancing Water Review

Sulwhasoo Balancing Water

Sulwhasoo Balancing Water alone is not much use. This “gel-based toner” refreshes the skin and leaves it feeling clean — without any miraculous effects. However, the beauty of this product occurs when paired with the Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion.

Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion Review

Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion Review

Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion

Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion is the standout product of the set. The best feature of the Emulsion is that you can use it alone and bypass the whole time-consuming skin care ritual. It provides nearly instant hydration with fresh, yet minimal, fragrance. Sulwhasoo’s Balancing Emulsion leaves an overall dewy texture and is an absolute pleasure to use.

Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream Review

Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream

Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream Review

Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream Review is meant for anti-aging purposes, which means it’s the most expensive product in the line. As described in my other Sulwhasoo article, the Concentrated Ginseng Cream is VERY earthy and completely unlike typical chemical-enriched anti-aging creams. If you have ever peeled back the skin of a weed, such as a dandelion, and smelled its milky white insides, the Ginseng Cream mimics the same sharpness. Your initial reaction may be of disgust or earthy admiration, but the smell fades away in seconds and your skin is protected with a shield of moisture.

When used together…

What the Sulwhasoo set boils down to is a serum, toner, moisturizer, and cream. The serum provides a nice base for the Balancing water, but doesn’t feel necessary. Skin will feel like a clean slate if the Sulwhasoo Balancing water toner is applied afterward. Best of all, the toner acts as a magnet to Sulwhasoo’s Balancing Emulsion, and together, they provide great moisture. Additionally, the Concentrated Ginseng Cream acts as a wonderful shield, particularly against frostbitten weather.

The Beauty Bitch’s Advice

Buy Sulwhasoo Balancing Emulsion alone or opt for both the emulsion and Balancing Water. For icy climates, the Concentrated Ginseng Cream works wonders, but don’t expect it to permanently reverse time, as no product really ever does.

Bazaar’s “Your Guide to Personal Style” Review

Finding your personal style

Personal style seems elusive and intangible when observing so-called “trend-setters” parading around in outfits that resemble garbage bags and other absurd objects.

I’ve learned that defining your personal style is an arduous process of throwing together pieces constructed of various fabrics in thousands of shades that, to the untrained eye, we’re unable to differentiate. Throw in a dash of proportion and an incredibly unrealistic amount of self-confidence, and poof, you’ve defined your personal style.

Harper's Bazaar Fashion: Your Guide to Personal Style

For the New Year, you may want to finally find your personal style and the security with who you are that comes with it. “Harper’s Bazaar Fashion: Your Guide to Personal Style” speaks about the meaning of fashion while trying to apply these lessons to real life situations, ranging from what to wear to work, to the airport, and brief makeup tips. The writing is very concise so if you are the type of person that needs specific instructions on what to wear, the advice may not suffice.

There aren’t many concrete guidelines to defining style in this book. Rather, there are more ideas juxtaposed to photos illustrating styles from “Classic Chic” to “Maverick Elegance”, and tid-bit bios from icons like Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis to Sarah Jessica Parker. Quotes and fashion sketches throughout the book connect the reader to big-name designers so common folk can see what creative currents run through trendsetting creations and the ornately ridiculous outfits that end up in Gilt sales.

Speaking of which, the book is au courant, citing style icons as Rihanna and Victoria Beckham. It also includes that personal style can be found at stores that produce knock-offs, like Zara, H&M, as well as the growing popularity of flash sales like Gilt, and Ideeli. Another concrete example of style essentials is two pages outlining the “essential” building blocks that should be in every woman’s wardrobe for each season.

Overall, the physical pleasure of reading this book outweighs the usefulness of its content. The pages are thick and glossy, and the gilded book cover looks darling peeking out of your pocketbook.

My advice is to buy this book, read it, and give it as a cute gift for someone interested in fashion or one who is looking to reinvent herself and her wardrobe. Or keep it as a magazine-type pick-me-up in your book collection; the gold cover sure is purdy.

Patricia Field Interview at MCM by Patricia Field Handbag Launch

Patricia Field Stylist

Patricia Field at MCM, The Plaza Hotel

Patricia Field, stylist, boutique owner, and fashion icon, recently collaborated with MCM on a new handbag line: MCM by Patricia Field bags. Entirely constructed of canvas, with the exception of leather handles and lining, Patricia Field brought her downtown version of Gwen Stefani’s harajuku girls to MCM Boutique at the Plaza where she explained her disdain for Vogue and how she manages to wear a graphic green Pucci puffer coat and still look edgy.

Patricia Field Bags for MCM

Patricia Field Bags for MCM

Why did you choose to collaborate with MCM?

In the 80s’, the Patricia Field Boutique favorite was the MCM bag. All the “ghetto kids” would go crazy for MCM because it was the most expensive… but I wouldn’t do a collaboration with some cheesy handbag brand; I want something that has significance. Designers work together because they have something in common, not just to sell something. Also, I hate to say it but, MCM bags are very heavy so when I teamed up with them, I made them light and easy to carry.

Patricia Fields Assistants at MCM

What do you think about the publishing industry?

Well, bloggers are the new journalists! Of course, I gotta have my paper books, but you know the one thing I hate about magazines is how bulky they are and then after a while, you don’t even know why you saved them. But I tell you one thing, I would never buy a Vogue magazine. Not only because it’s so heavy, but because… I like something that helps everyone, not only thinks of helping itself or selling. Harper’s Bazaar isn’t like that; it stays true to magazines.

Being a “rebel”, how do you find working with such mainstream productions as “Sex and the City”?

I’m not a rebel, I’m an individual. I live a nice life and I’ve had nice things all my life. My favorite coat when I was ten years old was a Burberry!

Engelhard wore a standout piece from their current collection: the Donelan Tuxedo Blazer. Fitted beautifully, the leather tuxedo jacket is also creatively constructed with a suede shawl lapel. The duo stress that they use animal friendly leather by integrating safe practice and incorporating local leather workers in the process. They also plan to use excess leather from car seat manufacturers to minimize waste.

Abakus

Abakus Jewelry designer Marsha Chun-Matsubara’s wrist is swallowed by layers of spikes while dozens of black lace-covered pearls drape her other arm. Despite Abakus’ endless combination of heavy stones, spikes and animal skins, the heavy metal or gothic lifestyle doesn’t properly reflect Chun-Matsubara’s personal tastes. Instead, Chun-Matsubara says she is more “into nature and its material” and she draws inspiration for her designs from the actual women who would wear them. Although she describes herself as earthy, she has an especially sarcastic and quirky sense of humor, demonstrated by saying of the jumble of pearls on her arm: “Some psycho from Dallas flew all the way here to buy this.” Her popularity is not without reason as Abakus jewelry has garnered appearances in W Magazine, “Confessions of a Shopaholic,” and even collaborations with Patricia Field.

Don’t let Larissa Bond’s looks fool you; this tomboy model turned jeweler exemplifies anything but bourgeois behavior. Slouched forward in a downtown leather jacket and tall boots, the natural born creator chats up a lighthearted storm with her Russian friend.

Hard to believe that she never wore jewelry until she reached her early 20’s, Bond’s collection is surprisingly delicate with a soft boldness. The word “LIFE” is crafted in a variety of tough cuffs, art deco earrings, and even a necklace. Taking a break from her rowdy behavior, Bond softens when she speaks of how the word “LIFE” holds a personal meaning — something that probably ties in with her rockstar ex-boyfriend.

Down to the bottles shaped like Hanbok, a traditional Korean women’s dress, the essence of Sulwhasoo is its pride in its Korean heritage.

Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream

Sulwhasoo Concentrated Ginseng Cream

Concentrated Ginseng Cream was passed around. When spread on, it smelled like the insides of a fresh plant — the pure white “milk” you could find if you peeled back the skin of a dandelion or plant. The cream, which is intended for night use, gleamed like soft oil and left a natural shimmer behind, the likes of which might resonate with the moonlight.

Connecting to Blakeway’s rich education in Asian Medicine and Sprituality was physicist (yes, as in physics!), Marek Stempi of Fusion Yoga. Together they reminisced about famous instructor Mantak Cmia and their obsessive love for the subjects. Blakeway explained to me, “People like us learn something new every day. I find myself in these incredibly profound situations because of my patients, as well.”

Something I learned was how there is little recognition of Korean culture in the United States. When discussing the main purchasers of Sulwhasoo, Blakeway commented, “The fact that [the Hanok dress] allows freedom of movement says a lot… especially in comparison to Japanese and Chinese women.” Stempi then added, “They are not wall flowers. In fact, they are very strong and passionate,” of which Blakeway strongly agreed.

Gucci Cruise 2011 Review

Gucci Cruise 2011 includes safe safari hues exemplified in urban shapes. Keeping the collection basic with very few unique embellishments is a wise way to play up the longevity of a Resort Collection, and to simplify the transition into another season.

Many of the 2011 Gucci Cruise Collection dresses “swallowed” the models, making look like the skinny little things they are. They don’t look too appealing on the Gucci models, but on a “normal” or otherwise curvy body type, these dresses would be bombshell-hot. Take for example the Gucci Dress in Saddlery Print below:

Couldn’t you see someone with a great hourglass figure like Katherine Heigl or Kim Kardashian rock this Gucci Dress? But instead, it looks one of these skinny things is playing dress-up with something from mommy’s closet.

Gucci Cruise 2011 even takes a hint from mainstream urban hits like the Rebecca Minkoff Morning After Bag. See Gucci’s Madison Boston Handbag compared to Rebecca Minkoff’s below:

Ouidad Does for Curls What Ensler Did for Vaginas

Ouidad Salon owner Ouidad at Curls Night Out

Ouidad Salon owner Ouidad at Curls Night Out

Vivacious, zealous, or just plain crazy about her curly hair, Ouidad is the spunky Lebanese owner of Ouidad salon and eponymous curl-centric hair care line. Standing in the middle of her Midtown New York salon, Oudiad welcomed girls with and without curls to try her revolutionary products and services at “Curls Night Out.”

For those who don’t get the reference to Eve Ensler’s groudbreaking performance piece “The Vagina Monologues”, both Enzler and Ouidad crusade to address subjects that women may be taught to feel self-concious of. For Ensler it was the word and secrecy embedded within “Vagina,” but Ouidad seeks to reverse irksome attitudes spiraling tendrils often receive.

Oudad’s belief that curls are beautiful came from her mother, whom Ouidad describes as a “demure femme fatale.” During Ouidad’s sermon at Ouidad Salon, she exorcised the pin-straight hair demons from the audience and preached the freedom of curl — one which her mantra “iron clothes, not curls” is inspired by.

Ouidad stated that 70% of women have curly hair, and most of them straighten it.  “With my products and advice you will be blown away by how beautiful your curls can be,” she assured. Ouidad’s main piece of curly hair styling advice is that “less is more.” And if you’re dealing with naturally straight hair, have no fear, start with a gentle perm-from Ouidad salon of course!

With my naturally wavy hair I was handed to Ouidad stylist Vincent, whose first piece of advice was to never use hot water on hair. This might be the hardest rule to follow given my heat-seeking ways. He then proceeded to wash my hair twice with Clear and Gentle Essential Daily Shampoo and then worked “>Ouidad Playcurl Volumizing Foam . Careful to use it on solely the hair, Vincent methodically used Ouidad Climate Control® Heat & Humidity Gel; massaging it in from front to front, side to side and back to back.

With my hair Vincent advised to rake and shape each product, wiggling the strands to create curls. After ensuring the waves, I put my head back as Vincent brought the towel towards the curls. He was careful to soak up excess water without ruining the curl and then did the same with a hairdryer equipped with a diffuser. I then air dried under those spaceship-like devices and emerged with more like individualized beachy waves rather than stereotypical squiggly curls. But something I’ve learned from Ouidad is that the curl comes in many beautiful forms, and I haven’t washed my hair since!

Presented by Events Manager for Lexus, Andrea Lim and CFDA Executive Director Steven Kolb, the event was about improving Quality of Life, without sacrificing aesthetic and great design. Standing proud in her vintage dress, Lim also added a “shameless plug” about how Lexus single-handedly coined the term “Luxury Hybrid.”

According to the Press Release “To qualify as a finalist, each designer had to demonstrate a commitment to ecologically responsible design and production practices, with a minimum of 25% of their collection being produced in an environmentally friendly manner.”

Filmed on a chilly Saturday afternoon, Meester wore a burgundy floor-length mermaid gown and wrapped herself in a black down coat to keep warm in between takes. Wang was on set in black leggings and boots, but quickly blended in with the crew as security rushed tourists and natives alike away from “hazardous” wires. The new Vera Wang Fragrance Advertisement was being shot by photographer Carter Smith.

Zac Posen the Humble Prodigy

With his frail posture, guests would hardly notice Zac Posen if he wasn’t escorted into a crowd of fans, media, and shoppers at Bloomingdale’s 59th street. Displaying his Resort 2011 collection to the masses, Zac Posen’s presentation also brought attendees down to earth with a line of bags from lower-priced Z Spoke, all approximately $500. This comes from a line that charges $800 for a simplistic swan-detail knit cardigan while simultaneously releasing a collaboration with Target; the “frugalista” headquarters.

Zac Posen’s appearance was surrounded by recent rumors that he would design Bella Swan’s dress for the next installment of Twilight, in addition to new CEO Susan Davidson running his company. Although he refused to disclose details of any upcoming or prospective projects, the success of Zac Posen’s designs are in question.

According to Vogue UK, and other sources “Yucaipa, the company that owns Zac Posen, were becoming reportedly frustrated that the label wasn’t making enough return on its investment and decided on a new CEO to boost profits.” This is in spite of the fact that Zac Posen’s designs have been worn by such celebrities as Kim Kardashian, Natalie Portman, Rihanna, Kate Winslet, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé Knowles and more. In addition, the diversity of his audience was also exemplified in the models posing in the Zac Posen Resort 2011 lookbook that was handed out that night.

When asked if he considered himself a prodigy after such early successes of garnering awards and praise since the tender age of 16, he vehemently shook his head “No.” A coy smile, “I just started my career; its taken me 10 years to learn the retail side, and now I’m working on the rest.” Taking into consideration the diversification of price ranges he has already implemented, one wonders what else Zac Posen can do to improve the performance of his company.

Bazaar’s Chic New Book Launch

Harper's Bazaar Book Launch at Saks Fifth Avenue

Harper’s Bazaar hosted a party to release their newest gilded hardcover book, “Harper’s Bazaar Fashion: Your Guide to Personal Style”

Designers Tory Burch, Rachel Roy, Founder, Designer and CCO of WHIT Whitney Pozgay, as well as Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey attended the event, which was held on the fabulously decorated 4th floor of Saks Fifth Avenue .

Roy gave a rebellious touch to the mainstream event wearing electric blue chunky heels and a glittering silver dress almost masked by an off-white vintage duster-cardigan. She topped the eclectic outfit with smudged back eyeliner and red lips, resembling a rock star on the verge of waking.

While Roy wore her eccentricities, the woman who embodied the attitude was none other than Harper’s Bazaar Editor-in-Chief Glenda Bailey. Bailey took a more refined approach to the event with a chic LBD and rectangular gold jewelry reminiscent of Frank Ghery’s large metal slabs. As she signed the new book for party guests, excitement rushed from her bold red lips, and it felt like she possessed the energy of all guests in the room.

The book includes quotes from designers reiterating the philosophy that style cannot be learned and that an outfit is not complete until you make it your own. The book also showcases current style icons ranging from Rihanna to Julianne Moore, making it relevant to all ages, ethnicities and body types. The price of a fashion piece is also discussed briefly, informing the reader that the “it” bag of the moment can stay in a closet forever, so choose wisely no matter the price.

“Alternative Apparel” for the Social & Environmentally Conscious

Alternative Apparel at Macy's

Alternative Apparel at Macy's

Alternative Apparel recently featured its easy worn-in clothing line sold at Macy’s Herald Square. The line has a vintage feel that borrows elements from hipster brand American Apparel. Both the material and shapes have a very cozy and traditionally American feeling. The twist, or alternative, is that the line offers an extensive eco-friendly and socially conscious policy.

For starters, their social responsibility policy vows not to utilize forced labor, child labor while respecting equitable compensation, and environmental protection. Alternative Apparel explains, “This translates into the use of recycled and organic materials, the use of low-impact dyes, energy conservation in manufacturing facilities, and various other specific actions.” They create their pieces from organic pesticide-free cotton and include “Eco-Heather, Eco-Fleece, Eco-French Terry and Eco-Vertigrain.” They even provide an Eco FAQ for easy answers.

An interesting concept they utilize in respecting human rights and such, they retain their manufacturing site in China. In short they state “China is a country with a history of human rights infringements and more recently, damaging environmental policy violations. However, our manufacturing in China is in full compliance with our fundamental Social Responsibility policies.”

POSHGLAM’s “BOO-bie” Benefit

There were far scarier things to think about than carved vegetables and annoying children during the month of Halloween, and last week fashion blog POSHGLAM addressed one of them: breast cancer. They held a  fundraiser to benefit St. Luke Roosevelt Comprehensive Breast Cancer Services Program in Manhattan, gathering guests to Eli Klein’s cozy, yet modern Art Gallery in SoHo.

The event was hosted by POSHGLAM founder Kimberly Stone and featured tables with fashion jewelry by Mali Beads and Monique Leshman. They pledged to donate 20% of sales from that night to St. Luke’s in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Some say that diet affects breast cancer, so health-conscious New York City restaurant chain Fig & Olive provided plenty of vegetable-packed dishes as well as fresh meats including carpaccio and shrimp. The treats were coupled with unique cocktails made with Alizé and Bouvet champagne, as well as Stella Artois, and non-alcoholic beverages from Neuro.

Kim Kardashian Sells Out? Fragrance Now at Macy’s

Kim Kardashian Greets a Fan at Macy's

Kim Kardashian Greets a Fan at Macy's

Fragrance salespeople offered a piece of Kim Kardashian last night at Macy’s Herald Square. Standing at the top metal barricades holding back curious tourists, desperate fans, and the media who arrived late; they monotonously announced “Buy the Kim Kardashian Perfume, meet her and take a picture.” Although the pitch was weak and unenthusiastic, the crowd literally bought it. The $119 price of the Kim Kardashian bottle was greeted with a “psh” or two, and even a JAP (Jewish American Princess) who asked if she could return it the next day, in her aloof valley girl accent. Whether the rest were inspired by the idea, or wanted to tell her obviously loaded ass off, the Kardashian momentum never ceased.

Line to Meet Kim Kardashian at Macy's

Line to Meet Kim Kardashian at Macy's

The zoo began once a Kim Kardashian fan screeched wildly from beyond the metal bars. Like a primal call to war, people started pushing for a glimpse of Kardashian and opening their wallets almost instantaneously. Ever since the fragrance launched through Sephora this past February, these seem like natural reactions.

With the luxe beauty retailer carrying the Kim Kardashian name, the NY Post reported earlier this year that there would be a split. Yesterday’s launch at Macy’s is a  manifestation of this foreshadowing.

The Kim Kardashian Perfume itself is strong and makes a heavy statement. Described as a woody floral, Kim Kardashian fragrance highlights crisp top notes of indolic jasmine, tuberose and gardenia, tonka bean, jacaranda wood and sandalwood. The scent also evokes the power Kim Kardashian has over her fans, media, and now; the mass retail fragrance markets.
